This large Darlington terrace, presented a unique opportunity for it's owners to introduce a purpose built studio and garage to the rear of site. The owners, an internationally renowned photographer and partner, sought to maximise the potential of their property in the short term by staging it's development. Arque were engaged to design Stage 1, which included a new garage with flexible space above designed to accommodate either a photography studio or apartment for short term rental. The design challenge was to satisfy the need for privacy, should the studio be rented out, whilst allowing for the studio to be a integral and connected part of the garden and property generally when being used by the owners. The view from the house was an important one, so the proposed skin of the garden elevation is an openable & flexible metal screen with the potential for it to become a backdrop for vertical planting. In addition to this structure a redesign of the garden and new pool & early schematic re-planning of the main house have also been explored.
Following the success of Stage 1 - Arque has been now engaged to design the alterations to the main house. The design for both house & studio are currently being documented for submission to council.
